OCTOBER 2019

DID YOU KNOW...

...that Governor Tom Ridge and Michele Ridge were on campus this month to attend the dedication ceremony of the new Thomas J. and Michele Ridge Archives archival displays on the renovated main floor? The Hammermill Library was closed for the afternoon on Monday, Oct. 7, to accommodate preparations for the honored guests, including the Ridge family and Mercyhurst President Michael Victor. Speeches were delivered by university representatives Caleb Pifer and Leanne Roberts, followed by Governor Ridge himself, with a reception held afterwards. For their kind donations to fund the renovations and display cases, the Mercyhurst University Libraries would like to recognize the generosity of:

Brian & Jessica DeFrancesco

Thomas B. Hagen

Hillman Family Foundation

Arnold & Winnie Palmer Foundation

David & Ellen Ryan

Michael & Mary Wood

University and Ridge Archivist Bryan Colvin worked with Dionne Veitch and Jeremy Hewitt in Mercyhurst's marketing and brand management department to create photo and artifact displays. Student employees Molly Kennedy, Shannon Gotham, Stevan Mooradian, and Hannah Pfeifer also helped in the archives to make the new exhibits possible. The items will remain on the main floor of Hammermill for the foreseeable future. However, Colvin and his student employees are not finished yet and continue to work in the archives on the third floor preserving the history of Mercyhurst and the Ridges.

WORK STUDY OF THE MONTH: NICOLE SCHWAB

The Work Study of the Month for October is Nicole Schwab, a sophomore majoring in Environmental Science. She is an Erie County native, coming to Mercyhurst from nearby Wattsburg. The customer service aspect of libraries is Nicole’s favorite part of working at the library, since she likes interacting with people. At home, she has an eclectic menagerie of pets, including emus, a deer, a teacup pig, a donkey, sheep, cows, cats, chickens, a turkey, and a few quail birds. After graduating, Nicole wishes to become a state game warden. We too hope she can help protect Pennsylvania's wildlife in the future!
